(File)Delhi News Highlights: Gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, who is currently in the Delhi Police’s custody, is the mastermind in the Sidhu Moosewala murder case, Special Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) H S Dhaliwal said on Wednesday. Addressing a press conference, Dhaliwal said the police have arrested Siddhesh Hiraman Kamle, a close associate of the main shooter in the killing of the popular singer and Congress leader. The police said Kamle has been arrested from Pune and added that five more suspects have been identified in connection with the murder case. Moosewala was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Punjab’s Mansa district on May 29.
Delhi recorded 564 new Covid cases, the highest since May 15, and one more fatality on Wednesday, while the positivity rate rose to 2.84 per cent, according to data shared by the health department here. With this, the national capital’s Covid-19 case tally increased to 19,09,991, while the death toll rose to 26,214. Wednesday’s cases are highest since May 15 when Delhi logged 613 Covid cases with a positivity rate of 2.74 per cent and three deaths. On Tuesday, the national capital logged 450 fresh Covid cases and one more death, while the positivity rate stood at 1.92 per cent.
A Delhi court on Wednesday upheld a trial court’s order which discharged Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, his deputy Manish Sisodia and nine others in a case of alleged assault on former chief secretary Anshu Prakash, a lawyer abreast with the case said. The case pertains to the alleged assault on Anshu Prakash during a meeting at Kejriwal’s official residence on February 19, 2018. Prakash had alleged that he was called for a meeting at the CM’s residence on the intervening night of February 19 and 20, 2018, and was allegedly assaulted by AAP MLAs when they questioned him over delay in publishing TV advertisements.
A five-year-old girl was tied and left on the roof of her house, allegedly by her mother, in Northeast Delhi Wednesday morning. A video purportedly shows the girl’s hands and legs tied with a rope, and her struggling under the beating sun. The Delhi Police said they have traced the family and initiated an enquiry against the parents.
In the video shot by a local, the girl is seen writhing as she tries to free herself and is also heard crying for help.
An initial probe has revealed that the girl was tied and put on the terrace as part of a punishment for not doing her school homework, an officer said, adding that she studies at a nearby school. Read More
Delhi Lt Governor V K Saxena and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday directed officials to take steps to prevent waterlogging and caving in of roads and footpaths during monsoon, asserting that they are on the same page on anything aimed at the well-being of Delhiites.
In a high-level meeting, which was also attended by Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, Saxena and Kejriwal directed the officials to build concrete cemented roads instead of bitumen ones at sites prone to waterlogging and flooding, according to a statement issued by the LG's office.
"Underlining that the crux of the meeting was that the people of the city should not be inconvenienced, the LG and the CM conveyed it in no uncertain terms that they did not differ on anything aimed at the well-being of the people of Delhi," the statement said. (PTI)
Lawrence Bishnoi, who is in custody of the Delhi Police in connection with Sidhu Moosewala's murder, has denied any involvement in the threat letter to actor Salman Khan and his father. Bishnoi was on Tuesday questioned by the Mumbai Police regarding the case.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday greeted Kashmiri Pandits on the occasion of 'Jyeshtha Ashtami' and said the entire country stands shoulder to shoulder with them in their happiness and sorrow. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor's remarks came in the backdrop of the spate of targeted killings of Kashmiri Pandits in Kashmir.
'Today is the holy day of Jyeshtha Ashtami. (I extend my) warm wishes to all Kashmiri Pandit brothers and sisters on this auspicious day. May the blessings of Maa Kheer Bhavani always be with you all,' Kejriwal said in a tweet in Hindi.
'I want to assure the Kashmiri Pandit community that the entire country is standing shoulder to shoulder with you in your every happiness and sorrow,' he said.
Taking note of the settlement reached between parties, the Delhi High Court has quashed an FIR registered for cheating, fraud, and misappropriation of money to the tune of Rs 90 lakh subject to both the accused and the complainant planting 400 trees before the monsoon season.
Further, the high court noted that the petitioner accused would pay the complainant a sum of Rs two crore in full and final settlement of all her claims.
Justice Jasmeet Singh said that the complainant was an old lady who wished to put a quietus to the matter in view of a settlement and asked her as well as the alleged offender to plant 200 trees each having a nursery life of three years and to look after their respective allotted trees for five years. After several missed deadlines, the Public Works Department (PWD) in Delhi has completed the construction of the Benito Juarez Marg Underpass for public use. The file has been moved to the office of Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia for fixing a date for the inauguration, said officials.
Officials also said that the construction of the skywalk from South Campus to Jesus and Mary and Maitreyi Colleges has also been completed for pedestrian use. “The construction work is completely finished. We have forwarded the file seeking to open the corridor for public use. We are expecting a reply in a few days. If the date is fixed, the stretch may be opened by this week only,” said a senior PWD official. Read more
Two groups in northwest Delhi’s Jahangirpuri allegedly got into a fight and pelted stones at each other late Tuesday night, said the police, adding that no casualties were reported but 3-5 vehicles were damaged in the process. The police, however, said that unlike the clashes that broke out in the area in April, this one did not have any communal angle to it.
Around 10.45 pm, locals made PCR calls to complain about the stone-pelting, said the police. CCTV footage from the area shows a group of men pelting stones at a house and running afterwards, added the police. Read more
Four men were arrested for allegedly killing a minor after he refused to give them Rs 10 for buying a cigarette in central Delhi’s Anand Parbat area, police said on Tuesday. The accused have been identified as Praveen (20), Ajay (23), and Jatin (24), all residents of Baba Faridpuri, and Sonu Kumar (20), a resident of Anand Parbat, they said.
On Monday, police found the minor’s body lying on the roadside with a stab injury to the upper abdomen near Ramjas School, Anand Parbat, a senior police officer said. Read more
Several vehicles were gutted after a massive fire broke out at an electric motor parking space in Delhi’s Jamia Nagar on Wednesday morning. Officers said over 80 vehicles were damaged in the fire. No casualties were reported. The Delhi Fire Services (DFS) received a call about the fire at 5 am. A total of 11 fire-tenders were rushed to douse the fire which had spread across the parking space. The Delhi High Court in a ruling has said that the public opposition to a liquor vend’s location cannot be the sole ground for cancellation of an excise licence. Public opinion or sentiment is not a factor relevant under the Delhi Excise Act for locating a liquor vend, said Justice Yashwant Varma while upholding the Financial Commissioner’s order on restoring licence to a restaurant in June 2019.

A fire broke out at the parking space of Okhla Vihar police station Wednesday morning. The Delhi Fire Services said that as many as 10 cars, 30 e-rickshaws and 50 damaged e-rickshaws were gutted in the fire. The incident took place around 5 am and 11 fire tenders were rushed to the spot.

The pace of Covid-19 vaccination in children between the ages of 12 and 14 years in Delhi has slowed down further, with shots given to those between the ages of 45 and 60 overtaking the numbers among children in June. The numbers have remained the highest in the 18- to 44-year-old category, the gap widening after the precaution dose was opened to them and uptake in the rest of the group declined.
There was a sharp increase in the number of younger children getting the Covid-19 vaccine in the month of March, when the drive was first opened for them, with the numbers gradually going down over the next month. However, the response to the second dose of the vaccine wasn’t so enthusiastic. Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah Tuesday inaugurated the National Tribal Research Institute (NTRI) in Delhi, which he said will have a role in nation-building.
The NTRI will be the premier national institute for the promotion and preservation of tribal heritage and culture and the nerve centre of tribal research issues and matters in academic, executive and legislative fields. “It is an important day today. As per the vision of PM Modi, National Tribal Research Institute is finally coming into existence. Controlling vehicular pollution could be key to reducing the surge in ozone levels in the city that comes with the rise in temperature, experts say. Over the past week, the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has identified ozone as a prominent pollutant in Delhi on June 2 and June 6.
Data from the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) for May also indicates that ozone levels were well above the 8-hour standard of 100 µg/m3 and hourly standard of 180 µg/m3 according to the National Ambient Air Quality Standards at different monitoring stations on multiple days. At 12 pm on May 20 at Anand Vihar, for instance, the ozone level was as high as 309.8 µg/m3, while it was around 235.9 µg/m3 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on May 19 at 1 pm. It was even higher at Anand Vihar at 7 pm on May 18, at 345.7 µg/m3. Read more
