Coimbatore: The state highways department has launched works to widen Anaikatti Road between
Lawley Road Junction and
Keartiman Matriculation Higher Secondary School at Kanuvai, for 5.2km.
The two-lane road poses risk to commuters, an official said. “Once widened, head-on collisions can be prevented. Apart from improving safety, travel time can be significantly brought down,” he said.

V Senthil Balaji inaugurated the work on Saturday. He also inaugurated six more road widening projects and road improvement projects, which will be carried out at a cost of 113 crore. All the roads are major ones connecting the city and the outskirts.
Works are under way for widening Kavundamapalayam-Onamapalayam Road for 3.4km 1.2km into four-lane and 2.2km into two-lane. The Thondamuthur Road will be widened for 3km between
Muthannankulam and
Thadagam Road Junction. Kavundampalayam-TVS Nagar Road and the congested road at KNG Pudur between Camford School and Urumandampalayam will be widened for 2.6km. Similarly, 1.5km on the Nachipalayam Road and 2km between Eachanari Road and Dindigul-Bengaluru Road will be widened and made four-lane.
“The works are in preliminary stages. Construction work will gain momentum in a few days. The projects will be completed within nine months” the official said.
Vadakovai-Maruthamalai Road and Thondamuthur-Narasipuram Road will also be widened. “They will have paved shoulders to ensure safety of two-wheeler users,” the official added.
