A CCTV grab of the alleged mobile thief in Sector 18 on May 20
CHANDIGARH : Two Class XII students who had accused an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) and a constable of torturing them in Sector 19 police station to admit to filing a false complaint of theft of mobile phones have been proved right, thanks to CCTV cameras.
Footage showed an unidentified person stealing mobile phones and cash from the boot of a Honda Activa scooter of one of the students parked outside a government school in Sector 18 on May 20.
Rajesh Kumar Yadav, the father of one of the students, said their children were not lying. “Instead of investigating the matter, cops were forcing students to accept mobiles were not stolen and thrashed them,” he said.
A CCTV camera installed at a shop in Sector 18 market showed a person roaming near the scooter for half an
hour. He wore a helmet, sat on the scooter, broke the lock of its boot and allegedly stole two mobiles and Rs 500 from a wallet on the morning of May 20.
However, police have still not registered a theft FIR, said family members who met the UT SSP at the police headquarters in Sector 9 and also demanded the registration of an FIR against the two cops. The SSP had suspended ASI Ashok Kumar and constable Vikas for allegedly thrashing the students on May 29.
Yadav said he has filed a complaint with the Chandigarh Commission for Protection of Child Rights (CCPCR) against both the cops.
The two 17-year-old boys had alleged the ASI and constable thrashed them after calling them to the police station on May 28 evening. Both are students of medical stream. One of them is a resident of Sector 30 and another of Raipur Khurd.
