The Jammu and Kashmir administration has issued necessary guidelines for the pilgrims of the annual Amarnath pilgrimage lasting 43 days. The administration has urged the passengers to go for morning walk and practice breathing exercises to keep themselves fit at the height. The holy journey is scheduled to begin on June 30, 2022 and will end on August 11, 2022, on Raksha Bandhan.

Nitishwar Kumar, principal secretary to Jammu and Kashmir's Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, said that devotees should go for morning walk, do breathing exercises, keep their warm clothes and food items and keep themselves hydrated. His remarks came after over 90 pilgrims lost their lives during the Char Dham Yatra in Uttarakhand. These deaths started due to heart attack, mountain sickness and other causes.

Kumar said on Saturday that the pilgrims who have registered themselves or are planning to do so. They should take morning or evening walk for about 4 to 5 hours daily. It is important to keep yourself fit for this journey. The holy cave is at a very high altitude of 12,700 feet. One has to cross 14,000 or 15,000 feet on the way. In such a situation, it is necessary to practice deep breathing exercises because there is a lack of oxygen at such a height.

Referring to the occasional drop in temperature in the high altitude region during rains, he said pilgrims should carry warm clothes as a precaution. The temperature drops to about 5 degrees when it rains during the journey. So keeping this in mind, warm clothes should be brought. Bring a walking stick, jacket and food items. Pilgrims have been asked to keep themselves hydrated to avoid dehydration.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah had discussed other issues including Amarnath Yatra recently in an important meeting regarding the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir. The Center has asked the governments of Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir and Odisha to take immediate steps to ensure that the Kedarnath Yatra and the upcoming Amarnath Yatra and Rath Yatra are organised in such a way as to ensure a high standard of cleanliness.
