Bengaluru’s first airport-like train station with centralised air-conditioning will commence operations from tonight after being completed for a whole year.

The Rs 314-crore Sir M Visvesvaraya Terminal at Byappanahalli will start operations following a formal inauguration by PM Narendra Modi

The façade of the terminal is designed on the lines of Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) and can cater to a daily footfall of 50,000.

The airport-like facilities include a VIP lounge, a passenger information system, a food court at the mega railway station.

The terminal also contains a rainwater collection system and a four-thousand-litre water recycling unit for long-term operation.

The Banaswadi-Ernakulam tri-weekly Express (no. 12684) will be the first to run from India’s first modernised railway terminal.

Officials said trains from Banaswadi, Cantonment and KR Puram to places like Kerala, West Bengal, Assam and Tripura will be shifted in the first phase.

According to source 30 pairs of long distance trains will be shifted to the Sir MV terminal in phases.

The long distance trains will serve to improve punctuality as well as decongesting the rail section.
