LUCKNOW: Lucknow has turned noisier and more deafening this year with an increase in noise pollution in residential, commercial and industrial areas as compared to the pre-monsoon period of 2021. This was revealed in the report 'Assessment of Ambient Air Quality of Lucknow city: Pre-Monsoon 2022', released by the CSIR-Indian Institute of Toxicology Research (IITR) on Saturday, the eve of World Environment Day.
The institute monitored day and night noise levels in nine localities of the city and found that levels recorded were far above then the permissible limits.
Among residential areas,
Indiranagar was the noisiest during the daytime followed by Gomtinagar, Aliganj and Vikasnagar while at night, Gomtinagar was harsh on the ears, recording high noise pollutions level. It was followed by Vikasnagar Indiranagar and Alganj.
Among commercial areas, Alambagh was the noisiest during the day followed by Charbagh, Aminabad and Chowk while at night, Charbagh was deafening followed by Chowk, Aminabad, and Alambagh.
"An increasing trend in noise pollution levels was recorded in every locality. Increased vehicular load that leads to traffic jams and construction activities was the main reason behind the increase in noise levels," said IITR chief scientist GC Kisku.
He said people should avoid unnecessary honking of horns, and going on drives and should rather promote carpooling to reduce vehicular load on the road.
"Studies have proven that exposure to high noise levels leads to anxiety and stress. Unwanted sound has a range of mental health effects, hearing loss, sleep disruptions, high blood pressure and others," said the scientist.
