AHMEDABAD: Gandhinagar police on Thursday found charred remains of a man and woman - aged between 25 and 40 according to the postmortem - from a secluded place near Narmada Canal in
Adalaj. Police officers suspect that this could be the case of an honour killing.
According to the postmortem report, they were hit with a blunt object on their heads around 10 days ago after which their bodies were burnt in the bushes near Adalaj Canal to destroy evidence.
An officer of Adalaj police said that some of the villagers spotted the bones scattered near Narmada Canal after which they informed the cops. A team of Adalaj police reached the spot and found that stray dogs had chewed on the bones. "When we saw the body, we were shocked to see the brutality of the crime. The killer might have tied them, and brought them to the deserted place near the slope of the canal and then hit them with a blunt object. When they died, he might have poured some inflammable material and then burnt the bodies to destroy the evidence," said a police officer.
The officer said that the dried grass on the periphery was also burnt which means that the two were forced to sit there before being set on fire.
Police could only find a ring and an earring from the woman's skeleton and upper part of the man's trousers.
"The heads of the man and woman including some hair were not burnt. Apart form that, some parts of lower bodies were half burnt. It seems that the killer might have stayed till the body almost burnt. Around 10% parts of their bodies were not burnt but rest of the bodies wergot charred," said another police officer. Sources in the police said, " that they suspect honour killing in this case as it seems that vengeance was the motive. Had there been other motive then they might have been killed separately." Police officers have also broadcast the belongings of the victims to figure out their identities. Apart from the ring, earring and the upper part of trousers, the cops also found a mattress near the remains.
Adalaj police registered a case of murder and destruction of evidence against an unknown person.
