Thiruvananthapuram: The All
India Save Education Committee has come out against the functioning of the abandoned
KSRTC bus which was turned into a classroom at the Manacaud lower primary school.
The committee has alleged that it is a violation of the provisions of
Kerala Education Rules (KER) regarding the infrastructure of a classroom. The committee has also informed that legal actions will be taken if the authorities are not ready to abide by the KER rules.
According to the All India Save Education Committee, the Section 5A of KER clearly provides the information regarding the infrastructure of a classroom. As per the rule, the classroom should be 20 feet wide, 20 feet long, 3 meter tall and should have a mandatory veranda. It also says that each child should have at least eight square feet of space.
They also added that converting the abandoned KSRTC bus to a classroom is also a violation of the right to education.
“The project is being implemented without studying the scientific aspects of it. The buses were made with fire conductor materials, which can be life threatening to children. The department of education so far has not specified under which law they implemented such a project. I believe the formal classroom system cannot be changed illegally. They are making formal education informal in the name of fun. If the government schools are facing a lack of classrooms, we demand the authority to explain the details. Legal action will be taken against the violations of Kerala Education Act and Rules,” Shajar Khan, state vice president of All India Save Education Committee, said.
The two buses, including a double decker and a low floor, were transported to the school from the Enchakkal KSRTC depot as per the announcement made by the transport minister
Antony Raju. The buses are placed in an area where an old building was demolished to construct a new one. Now, the area has been turned into a garden making more space constraints for the children.
