  • The Samas have announced the nominations for Record of the Year, Music Video of the Year and SAMPRA Artist of the Year.
  • Super producer DK Maphorisa lead the pack with five nominations followed by De Mthuda with four nods.
  • Other categories will be announced on Tuesday 7 June at an exclusive event.

The nominations for the 28th South Africa Music Awards (Samas) Record of the Year (ROTY), Music Video of the Year (MVOTY) and SAMPRA Artist of the Year (AOTY) categories took place Friday morning, with super-producer DJ Maphorisa leading the pack.

Lawd Phori, as he is popularly known, garnered five nods in ROTY and MVOTY for Abalele, Asibe Happy, Banyana and Izolo. These songs were in collaborations with Kabza De Small, Ami Faku, Tyler ICU, Daliwonga, Sir Trill, the late Amapiano vocalist Mpura and Visca.

Following close behind the Scorpion Kings artist is De Mthuda, who received four nominations for Jola featuring Sino Msolo and Da Muziqal Chef and John Wick featuring Sir Trill and Da Muziqal Chef, in both ROTY and MVOTY.

The Recording Industry of South Africa (RiSA) CEO Nhlanhla Sibisi said: "The calibre of nominees in the ROTY, SAMPRA AOTY and MVOTY categories this year are exciting in their diversity across genres.

"This cohort is a true reflection of ground breakers who have worked hard and adapted through a global pandemic to give us their best offerings. I encourage the fans to vote for their favourites while there is still time. We wish the nominees well and look forward to presenting these awards at the main event," said Sibisi.

The final public votes category is the SAMPRA Artist of the Year, which recognises musicians who excelled over the past year. This year it is contested by the likes of hitmaker Musa Keys, soulful singer-songwriter Msaki, Jennifer Zamudio, Cece Vee, Makhadzi and Young Stunna.

SAMPRA chief marketing officer Tiyani Maluleke said: "This year's SAMRA Artist of the Year nominees represents a generation of artists with distinct talent in a wide range of music genres. As Team SAMPRA, we are incredibly proud of each and every nominee.

"This year's nominees have all displayed admirable resilience and tenacity in their work, despite prevailing global uncertainties. Wishing all of them the best of luck as we move closer to crowning the SAMPRA Artist of the Year winner," said Maluleke.

The ROTY, MVOTY and SAMPRA AOTY are the only categories voted for exclusively by the public. The remaining nominees for adjudicated categories will be announced at an exclusive event on 7 June 2022 in Johannesburg.
