With Mumbai and suburban areas along with Pune, Thane, Raigad and Palghar among six districts recording an increase in weekly Covid positivity rates and cases, the Union health secretary has written to the state’s additional chief secretary asking for pre-emptive action to be taken to control any emerging spread of infection.

In a June 3 dated letter to additional chief secretary Dr Pradeep Vyas, Union health secretary Rajesh Bhushan has called for maintaining a strict watch on cases. Maharashtra has reported an increase in weekly new cases from 2,471 in the week ending May 27 to 4,883 in the week ending June 3. The strategy of “test, track, treat vaccination” should be followed along with Covid-appropriate behaviour and monitoring clusters of new cases, according to the letter.

In the week May 27 to June 2, there were 2,330 cases in Mumbai Suburban, 994 in Mumbai, 575 in Thane, 382 in Pune, 120 in Raigad and 55 in Palghar. According to the Maharashtra health department report, the state had 5,127 active Covid cases as on Friday.
