With the introduction of the Common Universities Entrance Test (CUET), the University of Delhi (DU) administration has announced that for candidates applying for UG admission under extracurricular activities (ECA)/sports supernumerary quota admissions, a weightage of 25% will be given to CUET score and 75% will be given to certificates/trials/performance. However, the exact details of the ECA/Sports quota admission process are yet to be streamlined.

Haneet Gandhi, dean (admissions), DU, says, “With CUET allowing candidates to apply for admission to UG courses at DU without added travel expense or related financial burden, we are sensitive to the concerns of students who may have to travel to Delhi just for ECA trials. We are in the process of finalising the exact policy, focused on making admissions fair for all.”

Before the pandemic hit, ECA admissions required students to get marks placed at a lower rung than the merit required for general admissions. If students had the required marks, they had to physically participate in trials/performances based on their ECA category/sub-category. In 2020-21, the physical trials and performances were replaced with depositing certificates showcasing their achievements over the last three years, which was further changed to certificates showcasing best performances in three out of the last four years in 2021-22.

“A key decision to be taken is whether ECA admissions will be done based on physical trials or certificate submission. Further, whether categories, sub-categories allowing admissions under this quota will change or remain same as last year needs to be decided,” says Gandhi. Until 2021-22, a main ECA category was culture, which had sub-categories of creative writing, dance, debate and more. In Sports, the main categories included athletics, badminton and more.

As per DU’s admission policy, colleges affiliated with the university are given 5% of super-numerary allowance to take admissions in the ECA category. Colleges must take a combination of ECA and sports candidates, the total number of which should not vary from 5% in totality.
