Congress president Sonia Gandhi has tested positive for Covid-19, the party’s chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said Thursday. “She has isolated herself under medical advice,” Surjewala said, adding that Gandhi had a mild fever. “We hope she will get better. We will get her tested again and her plan of visiting the ED stands,” he added.

Sonia Gandhi, 75, has been meeting leaders and activists over the last week, some of whom have been found positive for Covid-19, the party spokesperson tweeted.

On Wednesday, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) summoned Sonia Gandhi in a money laundering case to appear before it on June 8. The ED had also summoned party MP Rahul Gandhi over the same case on June 2 but he is not in India at present.

Surjewala said Sonia developed mild fever and Covid-19 symptoms on Wednesday evening. “As a large number of Congressmen and women and well-wishers have expressed concern, we want to stay that she is fine and recovering. We thank everyone for their good wishes,” tweeted Surjewala.

While the party has said that Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi would be appearing before the ED, a number of its leaders, including Abhishek Manu Singhvi has said that the government was misusing the central investigating agencies to attack the opposition. The Congress leader has also said that the party would not be intimidated by these “tactics”.
