Colic is one of the most distressing problems of infancy. It is distressing for the infant as well as for the parents. According to a new survey conducted by Mylo - a leading full-stack D2C platform for expecting and new mothers; 46% of mothers shared that their babies showed symptoms of colic; making it the second most common cause of infant distress after hunger.
The survey revealed that 53 percent of the time babies cry for no apparent reason while 29 percent cry intensely during the evenings or are still distressed even after the crying has subsided. Additionally, more than half of these mothers (51 percent) notice these symptoms of colic three or more times per week.
Although there is an increased awareness among young fathers to contribute towards household chores and taking care of children, it is still the mother who 90 percent of the time has to be up late in the night to calm the baby. Lack of sleep is all too common for more than 90 percent of the moms in the poll; resulting in fatigue, stress, and frustration. As a result, an increasing number of mothers alternate between breastfeeding and bottle feeding to get some much-needed rest. While 57 percent of mothers exclusively breastfeed their babies, 43 percent switch between the breast and bottle or exclusively bottle-feed. 21 percent of mothers said that they switch to bottle feeding when they feel exhausted and are unable to breastfeed, while 11 percent of the mothers bottle-fed their babies when they felt unwell. 29 percent of the mothers used bottles when they need to step out of the house or go to work.
A breast pump is also an easy and convenient way for a mother to safely express milk that can be consumed by her baby later.
