VADODARA: A major
fire broke out at a plant of
Deepak Nitrite company in Nandesari-GIDC (
Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation) area in Vadodara on Thursday evening.
Smoke billowing from the plant enveloped the area that also has some residential colonies.
Fire brigade officials rushed to the spot to douse the flames that seemed to be uncontrollable.
"It’s a major call. We are trying to control the spread of fire but we have no idea about any deaths or injuries yet,” a fire brigade official said.
Smoke began emanating from one of the manufacturing units and soon the fire spread in the adjacent buildings.
The deafening blasts at the site could be heard several kilometres away.
“We are monitoring the situation closely. The safety and well-being of all our employees, and that of the communities around, is of foremost priority to us. Our teams are already on-ground facilitating every possible support. Our communication channels are open round the clock, and we shall continue to provide updates and partner closely with all the relevant external stakeholders,” the company said in a statement on Thursday night.
There are several residential colonies near Nandesari-GIDC and the fire caused panic among the locals who ran from the spot for their life.
Several teams of cops had to be deployed at the spot and they cordoned off the roads leading to the firm.
About 15 fire vans were seen spraying foam and water from every direction.
Deepak Nitrite officials, however, were not available for comment.
Deepak Nitrite was established 50 years ago and it is one of the major chemical companies in the region.
The firm makes organic, inorganic, fine and specialty chemicals.
It has its manufacturing plants in Vadodara and Dahej in Gujarat.
