NEW DELHI: Racing against time and being built on a war footing, the New
Parliament Building is likely to be functional from November 26, sources said. The constituent assembly had adopted the
Indian Constitution on November 26 in 1949.
Since the beginning of the project, the government has maintained that the winter session of Parliament in 2022 will take place in the new building, which will have more modern amenities for members and visitors. Sources said shifting the house proceedings to the
New Parliament Building will be another milestone for the Narendra Modi government. Therefore, November 26 would be the ideal day to inaugurate the New Parliament Building.
“The contractor has been given the October end deadline to complete the project and hand it over. There will be no compromise on the deadline considering the national importance of this project,” said a source.
TOI has learnt that the progress of the project is being reviewed every week with all stakeholders — civil contractors, design consultants and other entities — involved in the project. There have also been several parallel meetings in small groups to resolve any issue on the spot so that there is no further delay in the project completion and the deadline for the completion of the project in its entirety doesn’t slip to 2023.
Sources said different components of the projects such as furniture and other elements to be used in the building are being readied at different locations at the same time, while stone work is being carried out on the structures which have been completed.
Officials admit that completing such a massive project with multiple specific requirements and that too with fresh changes in designs in such a limited period is a tough task. However, they are confident that both the chambers of
Lok Sabha and
Rajya Sabha will be ready by November for the winter session.
The New Parliament Building project includes spacious offices for ministers, leaders of political parties, swanky meeting halls and cafeterias.
