Tirupur: A controversy has erupted over renaming of the central bus terminus after former chief minister M
Karunanidhi following a general resolution passed by the
Tirupur city municipal corporation in this regard on Monday.
During the council meeting, mayor N Dinesh Kumar passed the resolution to rename the old bus terminus on Kamaraj Road as Muthamizh Arignar Dr Kalaignar Karunanidhi Central Bus Terminus. The terminus is currently being renovated under the Smart Cities Mission.
However, BJP and Aam Aadmi Party members expressed their displeasure over the move and suggested that the bus terminus be named after renowned freedom fighter
Tirupur Kumaran.
BJP councilor (ward 26) R Gunasekaran said, “We condemn the corporation’s move to rename the central bus terminus after Karunanidhi. This resolution was added to the agenda in the eleventh hour of the council meeting so that it would be passed without any hindrance.”
He said the bus terminus should be named after Tirupur Kumaran or K N Palanisamy Gounder, a former MLA who is regarded as the father of Tirupur for all his good deeds.
District president of Aam Aadmi Party S Sundarapandian, also echoed the same.
In a statement, state president of Hindu Munnani Kadeswara C
Subramaniam said, “The terminus should be renamed after Prime Minister
Narendra Modi as he has the sole credit to claim for renovating the facility under the Smart Cities Mission funds. The DMK leaders have no right to take credit for this development. As the nation is celebrating 75 years of independence, we should otherwise name the terminus after Tirupur Kumaran.”
Reacting to this, Tirupur Congress town and district president R Krishnan said they would pitch for naming the new bus terminus and Kovilvazhi bus terminus after former chief minister K Kamaraj and Tirupur Kumaran. The resolution passed by the council will be sent to the state government for approval, sources added.
