AHMEDABAD: In what comes as a warning for citizens, cases of waterborne diseases in the city are on an upward spiral even before the onset of monsoon.
The city hospitals have registered 26 new cases of
typhoid in the May 21 to 28 period. In the previous week, between May 14 and 21, the city hospitals had registered 66 new typhoid cases. Total typhoid cases from January 1 to May 28 stood at 640.
In the same week, the hospitals registered 76 new cases of diarrhoea bringing the total number of cases to 626 this month and 2,188 this year.
In comparison, only four cases of diarrhoea were registered in May last year and 3,610 in the entire year.
The number of jaundice cases stood at 139 on May 28, up from 110 on May 21. In May last year, the hospitals had registered 23 jaundice cases.
Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s (
AMC) health department data showed that cases of vector-borne diseases were also up as compared to last year.
The city hospitals registered 88 cases of malaria till May 28, up from 29 cases as on May 21. Only six cases were reported in May last year. Four new cases of falciparum were registered in the city this week while the number of dengue cases on May 28 stood at 17 up from 14 as on May 21.
AMC registers most complaints for mosquito control from its west, north-west, south and south-west zones.
A health department official said that this month 13,028 chlorine tests were carried out, of which 349 results showed absence of residual chlorine. The department collected 1,972 bacteriological samples and found 25 samples unfit.
