PATNA: Panic gripped Vijay Nagar locality in the state capital on Tuesday evening, when a 32-year-old man was shot dead while his elder brother suffered bullet injuries after the armed bike-borne assailants opened indiscriminate fire.
The eye-witnesses said two miscreants on a bike came from behind and opened fire at the duo, going to their home.
The deceased has been identified as Gautam Singh (32), who died on the spot. His elder brother Shambhu Singh has been hospitalised at a private hospital in Hanuman Nagar, from where the doctors have referred him to the PMCH. His condition is said to be critical. Both were the residents of Neema village under Dhanarua police station and brothers of a muscle-man Chitranjan Kumar Sharma, former BJP MLA from Arwal constituency.
The incident took place around 6.45pm under Patrakar Nagar police station, when the brothers were going on a bike to their rented accommodation at Vijay Nagar. Two assailants on a bike chased them and four rounds of bullets were fired on the victims. The police reached the spot sent the body for the postmortem at PMCH.
Patna SPP Manavjeet Singh Dhillon along with the senior police officials and SHO of Patrakar Nagar police station Manoranjan Bharti reached the spot for investigation. After preliminary investigation, the SSP said prima facie the incident appeared to be fallout of a rivalry between two gangs.
Dhillon told this newspaper that Gautam died on the spot after he sustained bullet injury on his head and chest while his brother also sustained two bullet injuries and presently he was undergoing treatment at the hospital.
“The shooters chased them and overtake their bike. They fired four times and fled from the spot. Three empty shells have been recovered from the spot. The police has been investigating the incident and complaint will lodged based on statement of the victim’s family members,” he said.
The SSP said former MLA Chitranjan, kingpin of the Pandava gang had an old rivalry with the gang of Sanjay Singh in Neema village.
“Sanjay and Chitranjan, both are distant relative and their village is divided into two gangs, fighting for supremacy. There have been murders in his family in the past as well. In the rivalry between these two gangs, 8-10 murders have happened in their families in last one decade,” he said.
According to police officials, two members of Chittaranjan’s family were earlier shot dead in Jehanabad and Masaudhi in Patna in April this year.
