Medinirai stares at unclean drains ahead of rains

Daltonganj: Ahead of the upcoming monsoon season, the Medinirai Municipal Corporation (MMC) is facing shortage of cleaners for around 140 big and small drains under 35 wards.
City manager of MMC Pradeep Kumar said, “We have only one or two men in each ward to clean the drains. The manpower is too less for the number of drains under our jurisdiction. Labourers from outside the district are also unavailable for the job.” A drain cleaner is paid Rs 337/day, he added.
The 35 wards are split into seven zones, each having five wards. The drains are in want of urgent desilting and cleaning. “We have many uncovered drains that get choked only a day after it is desilted. Polythene packets, plastics, wrappers of ready-to-eat snacks, medicine wrappers, and soiled sanitary pads fill the drains,” he said.
Kumar said many drains fall in to the Koel river directly leading to heavy pollution. Daltonganj lacks sewerage treatment plant in Daltonganj for the past 10 years.
