PANAJI: After
tomato prices dropped to Rs 70 per kg last week providing a respite to consumers, the rates have skyrocketed yet again, selling at Rs 100 per kg. Tomato
prices first touched the century mark last week only to come down by Rs 30 a couple of days ago.
Vendors said the price rise is due to a shortage from the suppliers’ end.
“Due to issues related to supply chain there is a sudden decrease in the quantity of tomatoes in the local market, which has led to the prices rising again,” vendors in the Panaji market said.
“With the
monsoon season expected to begin in a few days, it is likely that the prices may further rise.”
Two weeks ago, tomatoes were selling at Rs 60-80 per kg in retail depending upon the size. Last week, the prices skyrocketed to Rs 100 per kg owing to shortage in supply caused due to unfavourable weather conditions that led to crop loss. However, later that week, as the skies cleared and the summer temperatures took over again, the prices had fallen to Rs 70 per kg.
