Bhubaneswar: The commissionerate police fined 460 people of Rs 2.29 lakh for driving on wrong sides in the capital city in the past week. The special drive against wrong side driving started on May 22.
Altogether 180 people had died in Bhubaneswar in road accidents last year. Though wrong side driving did not claim any life here last year, a number of people were injured. Sources said at least 120 people were injured due to wrong side driving here last year. “We intensified our crackdown against the wrong side drivers at 21 locations in the city. Bulk of the violations were noticed on Cuttack Road and on the Jayadev
Vihar Nandankanan route. Our drive will continue,” a senior traffic police said.
The commissionerate police had in July 2020 sent a proposal to the home department, seeking nod for introduction of lane driving on NH-16, connecting Bhubaneswar and Cuttack. The police have planned to fix a 40 km-60 km/hr speed for the left lane (two-wheelers), 60 km/hr for middle (heavy vehicles) and 60 km-80 km/hr for right lane (cars) on the designated lane driving route. tnn
