NEW DELHI: A 40-year-old man, who was arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting his stepdaughter, died while being taken to a hospital in west Delhi on Saturday.
Police said he was thrashed by public before they reached the spot and a medical board will be formed for postmortem.
Deputy commissioner of police (
Dwarka) Shankar Choudhary had said on Friday that a PCR call was received at Dabri police station regarding an alleged rape incident. When police reached the spot, the girl’s mother told the investigating officer that the accused, a resident of
Uttam Nagar, was her second husband and had sexually assaulted the girl.
“The accused had already been beaten by public before police reached the spot. He was sent to a hospital in west Delhi’s Hari Nagar for treatment,” the DCP said. The accused had abrasion over the zygomatic and frontal scalp and bruises on upper back, a doctor told police.
A case was registered under the Pocso Act and the man was arrested. He was lodged at Dabri police station. “At around 6am on Saturday, he started feeling unwell and was unconscious. The SHO, Dabri, along with the staff took the accused to a hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival,” an officer said.
The DCP said that as the deceased was beaten by public, a case under section 304 (causing death by negligence) of IPC was registered on Saturday. The postmortem will be conducted by a medical board for neutrality and fair inquiry, Choudhary said. “Further investigations are on in both the cases,” he added.
