Met predicts rain in north Bihar today

PATNA: Residents woke up to a pleasant Sunday with early morning showers, thunderstorm and gusty wind providing them the much-needed respite from the sweltering heat in most parts of the state. Patna and neighboring districts received light to moderate rainfall with a wind speed of 30-40kmph on Sunday.
Some isolated places in north Bihar received heavy rain, including Valmiki Nagar (79.33mm), Manihari (44.6mm), Colgaon (35.6mm), Mehasi (26.6mm), Chakia (28.8mm) and Gopalganj (25.8mm). It brought mercury down by about 1-3 notches at most places. There was a significant drop in temperature due to cold winds in most parts of the state, including Patna.
Patna recorded 6.6mm of rainfall on Sunday. Minimum temperature in the city stood at 22.4 degrees Celsius and maximum 37.7 degrees Celsius.
Under the influence of east-west trough from northwest Rajasthan to south Bihar and southwesterly winds from Bay of Bengal to northeast India, scattered to fairly widespread rainfall has been predicted for north Bihar on Monday by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Isolated to scattered rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds would occur in Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal and Sikkim during the next five days. However, there will be no significant change in maximum temperature, the IMD said.
Kamini Kumari, an official at Patna Meteorological Centre, said, "The east-west trough which runs from northwest Rajasthan to east Assam across Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and sub-Himalayan West Bengal, now extends up to 0.9 km above mean sea level.
