GUWAHATI: Police in broad daylight on Sunday shot at a man charged with raping a minor, who had fled from Diphu Medical College in Diphu on Saturday night by breaching police security, at Dhansiri in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district. He was heading to Dimapur in Nagaland via Dhansiri when the incident took place, police said.
The person, identified as Iqbal Hussain (30), from Diphu sub-division, was admitted to hospital by the police on Saturday for medical assistance after he had complained of illness. Hussain was arrested on Friday after local residents caught him and handed him over to the police for allegedly raping a 11-year-old.
J Kubung, officer in-charge of the Diphu police station, told TOI, “The accused was beaten by the public before handing him over to the police on Friday. He had vomited and complained of stomach ache. Following this, he was admitted to the Diphu Medical College.”
He said the accused fled from the hospital around 11.30 pm on Saturday by breaking the toilet window.
