Over 10,000 nurses from state-run hospitals intensified their two-day stir by beginning an indefinite strike on Saturday.The nurses are protesting a move by the state department of medical education (DMER) to outsource hiring of nurses among other issues.

The Thane Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) has awarded a compensation of Rs 23.81 lakh to the parents of an engineering student who was killed in a road accident in 2018.In a recent order, a copy of which was made available on Saturday, MACT Chairman Abhay J Mantri ordered the offending vehicle's owner and insurer to jointly and severally make the payment to the claimants with seven per cent interest from the date of filing of the claim. Maharashtra health minister Rajesh Tope has said residents of districts in the state which are reporting an increase in daily coronavirus infections should start taking more caution and wear masks.Maharashtra on Saturday reported 529 new Covid-19 cases, but no virus-related death. The state had recorded 536 new cases and zero deaths on Friday, as per official figures. (PTI)

The BMC has assured citizens of having almost completed the trimming of dangerous trees in the city and 50% of other trees. The monsoon will test its claims, said green activists.Green activists and opposition leaders have alleged that with the BMC giving out trimming contracts to desilting and transport companies that have no scientific expertise in the matter, this monsoon too the city will lose hundreds of trees.

The driver of a truck suffered minor injuries after he lost control over the vehicle on Ghodbunder Road on Sunday morning and crashed into the barricades and pillar of an underconstruction metro line near Waghbil. The truck laden with nearly 35 tonne sugar was on its way to Gujarat.

The Maharashtra government will provide 10 sanitary napkins priced at Re 1 for women below the poverty line and those belonging to self-help groups.The scheme which will begin from August 15, is expected to benefit 60 lakh women and cost the state Rs 200 crore annually.

A day after the NCB gave a clean chit to actor Shah Rukh Khan’s son Aryan in the cruise drugs case, state home minister Dilip Walse Patil demanded action against former NCB zonal director Sameer Wankhede who had probed the case.“I feel action should be taken against Wankhede and it will be taken against him. When someone has framed an innocent person, he should be punished,” said Walse Patil on Saturday. “The Centre has taken note of what happened. I think they have given notice to take action against those concerned. ”

Experts say the present surge in Covid cases across Maharashtra could be the result of the newer Omicron sub-lineage in circulation. “It is possible these strains are pushing up the daily count, but there is no rise in deaths or worrying increase in hospitalisations. These are, after all, sub-lineages of Omicron to which there has been widespread exposure,” said a senior state health official.

Aryan Khan, son of actor Shah Rukh Khan, had advised his friend Arbaaz Merchant not to carry drugs to the cruise party, the latter said in his statement to the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB).Merchant (26) was named as an accused in the chargesheet submitted against 14 persons in the cruise drugs case on Friday. It is alleged that 6gm of charas was recovered from Merchant after the October 2021 raid. He is currently out on bail.
