Coimbatore: The municipal corporation plans to use discarded automobile parts and rusty scrap metal stored in its buildings to make sculptures.
North zone chairman
V Kathirvel had on Thursday urged corporation officials to remove scrap materials dumped in corporation buildings as they not only eat up space, but also cause sanitation problems. “Waste lying in corporation buildings and rooms of the engineering department have consumed 30% of the space, making it difficult for officials to work. The waste should be discarded,” he said.
There is a proposal to make sculptures using iron scrap, deputy commissioner of corporation M Sharmila said. “An artist assessed the scrap materials recently,” she told the council.
Giant metal sculptures of elephants, a symbol of Coimbatore district, made using scrap iron, will be installed at prominent places across the city and at recreational spots, a corporation official said. “Such structures are erected in various parts of the state. They are well-accepted and appreciated by residents. The sculptures will turn such places into selfie spots.”
