CHANDIGARH: In a major setback to former Haryana chief minister Om Prakash Chautala, a special CBI court in Delhi on Friday sentenced him to four years in jail for acquiring assets to the tune of Rs 2.81 crores beyond his known sources of income. The court of Vikas Dhull, special judge, Rouse Avenue court complex, Delhi also imposed a fine of Rs 50 lakh on Chautala, of which Rs 5 lakh would be paid to CBI to meet the expenses incurred on the prosecution/investigation of this case. The court also ordered the confiscation of Chautala's four properties.
Chautala has already spent around 15 months in jail in connection with this case and he will have to undergo the remaining sentence of over two-and-a-half years. The former CM was immediately taken into custody by the CBI after the sentencing on Friday.
Chautala has been sentenced to jail for the second time. The 87-year-old Indian National Lok Dal leader was jailed in January 2013 for irregularities in the recruitment of JBT primary teachers during his 1999-2005 tenure as the CM. Chautala was released from Tihar jail in July 2021 on completion of his term.
