TRICHY: An abandoned newborn female infant and her mother were rescued from near the Aandavar temple in Manapparai in the early hours of Friday.
Police said that locals heard the cries of the infant from a thorn bush near the old bridge near the Aandavar temple. Initially, they hesitated to take the infant out, but subsequently they rescued her by using a cloth. The infant was found with several injuries due to the thorns.
A few metres away, they spotted a 38-year-old woman with blood stains lying in a drowsy state. When they inquired with her, she said that she had delivered the child on her own on Thursday night and abandoned her there. Since she was physically unable to leave the spot, she stayed near the temple throughout the night.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the woman, a widow, was a native of Inam Reddypatti village near Manapparai. She was married and had an eight-year-old daughter, who is living with her relative.
The woman was in a relationship with another man after the death of her husband. She became pregnant but managed to hide it from her family.
Source said that the woman left home and decided to deliver the baby and abandon it to avoid social ignominy.
The infant and the mother were admitted to the government headquarters hospital in Manapparai.
