  • Kaizer Chiefs' football manager Bobby Motaung said it was imperative they gave Dillon Sheppard and Arthur Zwane a chance.
  • The duo assisted Gavin Hunt and Stuart Baxter in their indifferent stints as Kaizer Chiefs head coaches.
  • Zwane and Shepperd will be at the helm from a head coach and assistant combination on a three-year deal.

Kaizer Chiefs' football manager Bobby Motaung said Arthur Zwane and Dillon Shepperd are perfectly equipped to address the club's current trophyless challenge.

Zwane and Shepperd were appointed on three-year contracts as coach and assistant coach respectively after stints assisting Gavin Hunt and Stuart Baxter.

Chiefs haven't lifted any silverware since the 2014/15 season and have rifled through coaches without success.

Motaung said promoting internally may also bridge the club's intellectual capacity gap that tends to be widened with the appointment of an external coach.

"Different coaches have different challenges and fortunes. As a club, we play with a particular philosophy and every coach that comes in changes that," Motaung said.

"We've reached Cup finals and once finished second in the league, but we didn't achieve, so there are different factors to that.

"We didn't say those people failed, but we're trying to address those challenges, and keeping Arthur and Dillon explains that because they've seen the challenges.

"Football is about fortune and luck and what if they change dramatically this season? Some coaches came in and didn't understand our challenges and inherited them.

"The difference is that with people who have been in the system, they understand the challenges better and deal better with them."

With Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates also employing local coaches, Chiefs have joined the bandwagon again.

After Baxter's successful first term, they tried Steve Komphela and Gavin Hunt, with little to show for it.

Motaung said continuity is something they have taken from the two other big clubs in terms of their appointing mannerisms.

"There's been something good with what they have been doing and one of them has been continuity," Motaung said.

"When Pitso Mosimane left Sundowns, there was continuity in their staff, so maybe that's something we've been needing to tap into.

"That helps sustain the culture of the club, and Arthur, along with the guys in the technical team also understand this."

Players leaving

Motaung though was evasive when it came to the technical team additions and departures, along with the players who will either be joining or leaving the club.

"May I please allow those news to happen at the right time. We've announced the coaches and they've been part of the acquisition processes," Motaung said.

"They've been part of the announcements as to who is coming and going. Those who are leaving have also been informed.

"Let's allow the issue of the players who are leaving to be announced in due course.

"There will be a couple of additions and changes to the technical team, but like the players, those announcements will be made at a later stage," Motaung said.

"Whatever we are doing, we are doing together with the coaches and they are part of the process."
