SIT begins probe into police station arson, 7 arrested so far

Guwahati: A six-member special investigation team (SIT) headed by an additional superintendent of police (security & intelligence) has begun investigation into the police station arson case in central Assam’s Nagaon district.
Meanwhile, the number of total accused arrested in the case has gone up to seven with the arrest of one more person on Thursday morning.
Leena Doley, superintendent of police of Nagaon, told TOI that the team led by the additional SP (security & intelligence) Nirupam Hazarika has already made progress in the case. “The team will complete the investigation within 45 days and submit the charge sheet within 60 days.”
Police arrested Omar Faruq from Bhomoraguri in connection with a case of vandalising and setting the Batadrava police station on fire on Saturday over alleged custodial death of a fish trader, Safiqul Islam, that day. Police identified Faruq after analysing the video evidence of the incident.
The six persons arrested earlier are currently in police custody.
Additional SP of Karbi Anglong Prakash Sonowal is carrying out an ‘independent investigation’ into the death of Islam.
Doley added, “The incident was probably planned to destroy the evidence, case records and case diaries of the people involved in criminal activities. We have found certain evidence to establish that.”
