Mumbai News live: The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) while giving a clean chit to Aryan Khan, son of Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, in the last year’s drugs-on-cruise case has said that there was no recovery of drugs from him, nor was there any concrete evidence to prove that he conspired with the other accused.

Maharashtra on Friday recorded 536 new coronavirus infections — the highest one-day rise in cases since March 3 — but zero pandemic-related fatalities, the health department said. The tally of active cases crossed the 2,500-mark, it said. On March 3, the state had recorded 544 new infections. The state’s COVID-19 caseload rose to 78,84,865 while death toll stood unchanged at 1,47,858.

Women in Tiradshet village, Nashik district broke into protest on Saturday expressing their angst against severe water scarcity which remains unabated in their village. “Despite our village being in the vicinity of Nashik city, we don’t have water facilities for the last 50 years. Women here walk every day to fetch water. Most of us are labourers, still we have to scramble for water instead of going to work”, they said, according to news agency ANI.

SpiceJet plane returns to Mumbai after windshield crack observed

A SpiceJet plane, which was heading to Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh, returned to Mumbai on Saturday after a crack was observed on the windshield, according to an official statement.

"On May 28, SpiceJet Boeing 737 aircraft was scheduled to operate SG-385 (Mumbai-Gorakhpur). During cruise, windshield outer pane was observed to be cracked," the airline's spokesperson said.

The pilot-in-command decided to return to Mumbai, the spokesperson said. The air traffic controller was apprised and the aircraft landed safely at the Mumbai airport, the spokesperson added. PTI

Maha forbids depts from transferring officials till June 30; essential ones allowed with CM's nod

he Maharashtra government has directed all its departments to not carry out transfer of officials till June 30.

An order issued by the state government's general administration department on Friday said essential transfers due to administrative reasons can be done only after permission is taken from Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray. (PTI)

World Menstrual Hygiene Day: Maha govt to launch scheme to provide 10 sanitary napkins for Re 1

The Maharashtra government on Saturday announced a scheme under which women in the BPL category and those part of self help groups (SHGs) will be provided 10 sanitary napkins at Re 1.

The order, which was issued by state Rural Development Department minister Hasan Mushrif, will be implemented from August 15 and will benefit 60 lakh women in rural areas.

The decision was taken to mark World Menstrual Hygiene Day. The implementation of the scheme will cost the state government Rs 200 crore annually, the minister said. (PTI)

Maha: Nurses' strike affects Mumbai's JJ Hosp; most outfits stay away from stir

The strike call given by a union of nurses attached to government-run hospitals in Maharashtra evoked mixed response on the first day on Saturday with most of the other outfits in the sector maintaining a distance from the stir.

However, officials admitted that some hospitals did face problems, including postponement of some surgeries.

While surgeries like insertion of stents were postponed in state-run JJ Hospital here, which was considerably affected, there was little impact of the strike call by the Maharashtra State Nurses Association on other facilities like St George, Cama and Albless and Gokuldas Tejpal hospitals in the city, they said. Mumbai civic chief Chahal empanelled in rank of secretary by Union govt

Mumbai civic chief IS Chahal on Saturday said he had been empanelled in the rank of Secretary by the Union government.

Taking to social media to share the information, Chahal, who has won widespread praise for his effective handling of the Covid-19 pandemic in Mumbai over the past two years, said "this (empanelment) is one of the most important milestones in the career of an IAS officer".

However, it is not clear in which Central government department Chahal, who has been Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation chief since May 2020, will be working. (PTI)

Maha records 529 new Covid-19 cases, zero fatalities

Maharashtra on Saturday reported 529 new cases of coronavirus infection but no virus-related death, the state health department said. The state had recorded 536 new cases and zero deaths the day before.

As many as 325 people were discharged from hospitals or recovered at home on Saturday, taking the count of recoveries to 77,34,764, leaving the state with 2,772 active cases.

The fatality rate stands at 1.87 per cent, while the recovery rate is 98.09 per cent. Mumbai reported 330 new cases, followed by neighbouring Thane city with 38, Pune with 32 and Navi Mumbai with 31 cases. (PTI)

Cases of B.A. sub-lineage of Omicron found in Maharashtra for first time

For the first time, four patients of B.A. 4 variant and three cases of B.A. 5 variants of the Omicron sub-lineage of coronavirus have been found in Maharashtra, an official of the state health department said on Saturday.

All of them had only mild symptoms and were treated at home, he added. These sub-lineages of Omicron were found in April in some parts of the world including South Africa, but until now no cases had been detected in the state. Read More

New curbs likely if Covid cases rise rapidly: Maharashtra Dy CM Ajit Pawar

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on Saturday urged people to take precautionary measures following the rise in Covid-19 infections. “If the Covid 19 cases continue to increase rapidly, the state government will have to reconsider imposing some restrictions,” he said.

The state recorded 536 new cases in the past 24 hours. A couple of days ago, the number was 100. Citing the increased numbers, Pawar indicated some precautionary measures and new guidelines would have to be considered if the situation got worse. Read More

Mumbai: Man stabbed to death during argument

A 20-year-old man was stabbed to death during an argument in Trombay suburb in Mumbai, a police official said on Saturday.

The incident took place in Cheetah Camp in the early hours of Friday and the deceased has been identified as Rizwan Zafar Sayyad, he said "Rizwan had an argument with the accused, who thrashed him and then stabbed him to death. The accused has been arrested," the official said. (PTI)

Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut on Saturday congratulated NCP leader Nawab Malik for "exposing" the farce behind the 'drugs on cruise' case involving Aryan Khan, son Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan. Raut said Malik is paying the price for exposing the farce behind the case and the real face of the BJP.

The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) on Friday gave a clean chit to Aryan Khan in the 'drugs on cruise' case, in which he was arrested and spent 22 days in jail. NCB officials said Aryan and five others were not named in the agency's chargesheet due to "lack of sufficient evidence". Following this, the government has ordered action against Wankhede for his alleged "shoddy" work while probing the case.

Malik, a Maharashtra minister, had launched a veritable campaign against the then NCB officer Sameer Wankhede, accusing him of implicating Aryan Khan in a false case to extort money from his father Shah Rukh Khan. (PTI)

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Saturday said that freedom fighter Vinayak Damodar Savarkar's "scientific thinking" and "staunch nationalism" continue to be an inspiration for the country.

Paying tributes to the Hindutva ideologue on his 139th birth anniversary, Thackeray said Savarkar was a multi-faceted personality.

"He was a litterateur, a powerful orator, a good organizer who waged a war against British rule. His scientific thinking and staunch nationalism are an inspiration," the chief minister was quoted as saying in an official release. The 14 chargesheeted by NCB: Eight people arrested onboard Cordelia cruise, 6 later

Among the 14 people whom the NCB chargesheeted on Friday in connection to the Cordelia cruise ship drug raid case, eight were arrested onboard the ship on October 2, 2021. Of the eight, seven were found in possession of contraband. The remaining six persons chargesheeted are suppliers of drugs.

According to the NCB, one of its intelligence officers – Haresh Gangan – had received prior information that over 10 people, who were participating in an event as guests on the ship, were carrying drugs. Read More

Mumbai traffic police to conduct two-hour no honking drive today

The Mumbai traffic police will conduct a no honking drive on prominent roads in the city, under which motorists will be urged not to use horns from 5 pm to 7 pm on Saturday, an official said.

The initiative is a part of an awareness programme for motorists to curb noise pollution in the city, he said.

The drive will be held from 5 pm to 7 pm on prominent roads across the city, the official said.

"Your Street Or Mine. Honking Anywhere Won't Be Quite Fine. On the occasion of #NoHonkingDay on May 28, 2022 from 5-7 pm. Pawar took darshan of Dagdusheth Ganpati from outside temple as he had eaten non-veg food: NCP leader

NCP chief Sharad Pawar, who was to visit the famous Dagdusheth Ganpati temple here, took 'darshan' of the deity from outside the complex as he had eaten non-vegetarian food, the party's Pune unit president Prashant Jagtap has said.

Pawar was in the city on Friday to inspect the tract of land adjoining Dagdusheth Ganpati temple amid a long-pending demand that the land be handed over to the temple trust. The land belongs to the state home department, which is currently headed by NCP leader Dilip Walse Patil.

As Pawar did not enter the temple premises and took darshan from outside, questions were raised about it. However, talking to reporters in the evening, Jagtap clarified about it.

'He (Pawar) had planned to go to the temple. However, he preferred to take darshan from outside as he had eaten non-vegetarian food,' Jagtap said. (PTI)

Maha RS polls: MVA govt, NCP cornered, misled Sambhaji, says Fadnavis

Senior BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis on Friday said the MVA government and NCP chief Sharad Pawar misled and cornered Sambhaji Chhatrapati in the run up to the polls for six Rajya Sabha seats from Maharashtra.

Sambhaji Chhatrapati, a descendant of Shivaji Maharaj and prominent Maratha leader, who had announced that he would contest the RS polls as an Independent, had, earlier in the day, said he was pulling out after failing to garner support for his re-election bid.

"The way MVA treated Sambhajiraje Chhatrapati is highly condemnable. It seems the (state) government deliberately cornered him. When he had approached me and informed that he wished to contest as an Independent, I had made it clear that if he managed to get support across parties, I will speak to our high command (about giving extra party votes to him)," Fadnavis said. Tribunal asks BEST to pay Rs 13 lakh compensation to kin of bus accident victim

The Thane Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) has ordered the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) to pay Rs 13.21 lakh compensation to the family of a 20-year man, who lost his life in 2017 in a road accident involving a bus operated by the undertaking.

The BEST undertaking provides bus transport services in Mumbai and in neighbouring Navi Mumbai, Thane and Mira Bhayandar areas.

In the order passed on May 19, MACT member M M Walimohammed ordered the BEST to make the payment to the claimants within two moths along with the interest at the rate of 7 per cent per annum from the date of filing of the claim, failing which it will have to pay interest at 8 per cent till the realisation of the award amount.

The claimants are the victim's mother Mina Vasant Patil (51) and brother Vivek Vasant Patil (30), both residents of Adai village located in Panvel tehsil of Maharashtra's Raigad district. (PTI)

AAP teams visit Mumbai’s landslide-prone areas, say BMC has no plans to save lives

Ahead of the monsoon, landslide-prone areas dotting Mumbai have once against endangered the lives of thousands of families. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) activists personally visited some of these vulnerable spots and according to them, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has no plans to tackle landslides during the monsoon.

In a statement issued Friday, the AAP said, “As per the RTI replies secured by RTI activist Anil Galgali, there are 327 landslide-prone areas while the BMC claims there are 291. Galgali says 22,483 families are at risk in the monsoons.”

“In 2021, more than 30 people died in the dual landslides of Bharat Nagar in Chembur and Suryanagar in Vikhroli. State environment Minister Aaditya Thackeray had allotted a fund of Rs 61.48 crore to secure these flood-prone areas but sadly, nothing has happened to safeguard the people, probably because they are the poorest of the poor,” AAP said. NCB seizes narcotics worth Rs 1 cr in Mumbai; one held

The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) seized amphetamine, ecstasy tablets, paper blots of LSD and cocaine worth around Rs 1 crore in recent operations in Mumbai and arrested one person, an official said on Friday.

A team from the NCB's Mumbai zonal unit on Monday seized 970 gm of amphetamine (commercial quantity), valued at Rs 80 lakh, in Andheri (east), a release issued by the probe agency stated.

The contraband was concealed in four brown-coloured wooden ashtrays, which were part of a shipment destined to New Zealand, it added. In a separate operation, the agency recovered 104 gm of ecstasy tablets, 100 paper blots of LSD weighing 2 gm (all commercial quantity) and 25 gm of cocaine at Foreign Post Office here on Wednesday, the release said. Learning outcomes get worse in higher classes for Maharashtra students; Mumbai worst in state

The learning outcome among high school children in Mumbai suburban area is the worst in Maharashtra, revealed the results of the National Achievement Survey (NAS) 2021 released Wednesday evening. Even when it comes to primary school children, Mumbai fared only slightly better than the remote, insurgency-hit Gadchiroli, the report showed.

Conducted on November 12, 2021, NAS assessed over 34 lakh students in 1.8 lakh schools in 720 districts across India. The purpose of NAS is to gauge the health of the school education system and assess learning outcomes in students by conducting an evaluation of their learning competency at Class III, V, VIII and X, officials said. The NAS was last held in 2017.
