GURUGRAM: An MBBS graduate was allegedly cheated of Rs 52 lakh on the pretext of admission for higher studies in Kolkata. Shubhanshu Vats, a resident of Sector 4, told police that he received a text message offering admission for the Doctor of Medicine (MD) course in a medical college in Kolkata on March 8.
Vats contacted the college on the number provided. The person who picked up his call identified himself as Satish Malik and asked Vats to send his academic documents and financial details to an email ID. After this, Malik asked him for a demand draft of Rs 23 lakh for admission.
"My family and I went to check the college in Kolkata, where we met Ratan, Sudip and Adil Ahmed, who claimed to be college officials. I handed over Rs 8 lakh and my documents to them," Vats told cops.
Later, he was told he would have to pay Rs 50 lakh more to another person, who called himself Dr PN Dutta, for admission. In total, Vats paid Rs 52 lakh to the men and were given an allotment letter for admission. Later, when he called up, Satish and the others for the admission details, their phone numbers were found to be switched off.
Vats returned to the college in Kolkata and learnt that the allotment letter was fake. He filed a police complaint on April 6. After a probe, an FIR was filed on May 25 against the accused men at Sector 9A police station under sections 120B (criminal conspiracy), 420 (cheating), 467 (forgery), 468 (forgery for cheating) and 471 (fraud) of the IPC.
"We have booked around half a dozen people for duping the medical student. No arrests have been made yet," said a police officer.
