Bagalkot: When most educated youths are either trying to get a job or become an entrepreneur, at least horticulture graduates should cultivate interest in
farming to take the country on a progressive path, said
governor Thawar Chand Gehlot.
Presiding over the 11th convocation of the
University of Horticultural Sciences here on Wednesday, Gehlot said Indian weather is most compatible for farming compared to other countries and it’s appropriate to grow different crops as per the seasons. “Our country is still agriculture oriented and agriculture graduates have to look out for wall and terrace garden horticulture,” he said.
Mentioning the instance of Israel, horticulture minister Munirathna suggested students to take the knowledge to farmers. Water conservationist Rajendra Singh stressed on the need of creating awareness on water conservation and usage.
An honorary doctorate was conferred on former minister and progressive farmer of Hiriyur H Ekanthaiah. Vice chancellor KM Indiresh,
Bagalkot DC P Sunil Kumar, SP Lokesh Jagalasar and others were present.
Gold medal winners
Ummesara, daughter of Asmat Ali and Raheema Banu, farmers of Gullampete in Chikkamagalur district, received 16 gold medals during the the convocation. As many as 34 students received 77 gold medals.
