Trichy plans 24X7 water supply in city

Meanwhile, at the council meeting, ward 2 councillor Jawahar V raised a demand to survey suitable places in Srirangam for a bus terminus.
TRICHY: Considering the expansion proposal of Trichy city and the spurt in industrial investments, Trichy Corporation has planned to augment drinking water supply by an additional 100 MLD to facilitate round-the-clock water supply for residential and commercial connections.
In the emergency council meeting held at the main office of the corporation on Wednesday, mayor Mu Anbalagan said that the civic body will present the budget for the financial year 2022-2023 on May 30.
“Municipal administration minister K N Nehru has been discussing the proposal for augmenting the drinking water yield of the city. Consultations with the Twad (Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage) board were held. It will be a 24X7 drinking water supply scheme,” the mayor told the gathering. Officials told TOI that a plan for a check dam is on the cards on the western side of the new Kollidam bridge near Aalavanthan Ghat well to retain water and recharge the collector wells of the local body. As the work to facilitate round-the-clock drinking water for six localities is progressing, further augmentation of the source will make the city drinking water surplus. At present, the civic body yields 135 MLD of water from the Cauvery and Kollidam.
Meanwhile, at the council meeting, ward 2 councillor Jawahar V raised a demand to survey suitable places in Srirangam for a bus terminus. As there was opposition from the councillors to collecting entry fees for vans and buses visiting Srirangam, the mayor said that the proposal to collect entry fees in Srirangam will be scrapped.
“The civic body must expedite the underground drainage work. Roads in all parts of the city are in a pathetic state,” K Suresh, councillor of ward 23, said. The mayor intervened and said that the contractors have to speed up the work in such a manner that new roads shall be laid before December 31.
The council also passed a resolution to purchase 70 light commercial vehicles spending Rs 8 crore to strengthen the waste collection system.
For the existing 100 battery-powered waste collection vehicles, charging points are to be established in around 40 spots. Resolutions were also passed to appoint temporary sanitary workers and build two LPG crematoriums at Syndicate Bank colony and Kulimikkarai.
