Nagpur: A false ceiling caved in at almost six places, including inside the chamber of the DCP, headquarters, at the newly-inaugurated
Police Bhavan, which houses the city and rural police head offices, in Civil Lines.
The incident occurred when a meeting was underway on Tuesday evening. Fortunately, nobody was hurt.
Apart from DCP Chetna Tidke’s chamber on fifth floor, false ceilings at the toilet blocks on the sixth floor and also one in the verandah caved in at the city police’s wing.
At the rural police’s wing, a portion of the false ceilings at the economic offence wing’s office on the sixth floor and at the application branch on the fourth floor fell down.
The six-storey building was inaugurated by deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar and state home minister Dilip Walse Patil on April 29. The construction was done by the Mehta construction. City police chief Amitesh Kumar said his office would inform the Maharashtra State Police Housing and Welfare Company Limited which supervised the works. “There are certain teething issues and we are expecting a prompt redressal,” said the CP.
Though the top brass of city and rural police have urged the civil contractor to repair the damages a day after the collapse, the personnel posted at the Police Bhavan are already have already flagged a few issues.
A source said the building is functioning sans drinking water supply and has poor ventilation and air circulation. “Even the centralized ducting isn’t working satisfactorily and it’s suffocating in most of the chambers,” the source said. It’s learnt, many of the toilets on different floors don’t have water supply,
On Tuesday, cops had kept the windows open due to the sweltering heat when strong winds led to the problem with the false ceilings. The panels started loosening and crashing on the floors. Though the damage has been fixed, personnel, especially on the fifth and sixth floors, at the Police Bhavan are wary of keeping the windows open during the monsoon when gusty winds are more common.
Sources in the rural police said that an emergency meeting was held with the local representatives of the contractor. “We would be submitting a report to the Maharashtra State Police Housing and Welfare Corporation Limited about the incident,” said a senior official.
