GUWAHATI: Police on Wednesday seized suspected heroin valued at Rs 4 crore in the international market and arrested one person from Mariani in upper Assam's Jorhat district.
The arrested person has been identified as Ajit Orang (30) of Sarupathar in Golaghat district.
Trilochan Nath, officer-in-charge of Mariani police station, said a vehicle was intercepted at Heelekha on Tuesday night during an operation launched based on specific inputs. "We recovered a few soap cases filled with suspected heroin on Tuesday night. On Wednesday morning, we searched the vehicle and recovered a few more soap cases from hidden compartments," he added.
Meanwhile, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, while hailing the drug haul, said, "Assam police have been doing incredibly well in its drive to combat the menace of drugs in the state."
Police sources said they suspect the seized heroin was smuggled from Nagaland to Jorhat via Karbi Anglong or Golaghat as these two districts share borders with Nagaland. The sources said drugs are pumped in through the Indo-Myanmar border to Manipur first, then Nagaland before entering Assam.
