Guwahati: For the first time since Independence, students in
Assam’s tea garden areas can avail of secondary education without having to move out of home after chief minister Himanta Biswa
Sarma on Wednesday inaugurated 96 newly built model high schools in the vicinity of gardens.
Sarma inaugurated Tezpur-Ghogora and Rupajuli Tea Garden Model School, Sonajuli Tea Garden Model High School, Nahoroni Model High School and Phulbari and Thakurbari Model High School in person in Sonitpur district.
“The state government for the first time has set up model high schools in the tea garden areas. These schools will be able to impart quality and value-based education to the students to help them bring laurels to the state,” he said.
Sarma said in the 96 model schools, as many as 14,594 students have been enrolled, which he felt was an encouraging response. “Eight faculty members in each school have been appointed which has ushered in a ray of hope in the tea garden areas,” he added.
Sarma announced that these schools will be named after great personalities belonging to the tea communities or those who have contributed towards the socio-economic and academic development of the tea communities. The model school in Tezpur-Ghogora has been named after martyr
Mangri Orang, Rupajuli Tea Garden Model School as Amiyo Kumar Das Model High School and Sonajuli Tea Garden Model High School as
Swahid Hemlal Kalandi Model High School. He also said from the coming academic session, all the model high schools will be upgraded to higher secondary schools.
