Nagaon PS attack: 6 sent to 5-day police custody

Guwahati: A court on Monday remanded the six arrested accused of vandalising and setting a police station on fire in Assam’s Nagaon district to five-day police custody, police said.
SP Leena Doley said, “Six persons were arrested and 12 were detained in this connection. The detained persons have been released after their involvement in the incident was not found during the probe.” She added that police recovered one handmade revolver and four rounds of 9mm live bullets from the residence of accused Iman Ali and 6,500 drug tablets from accused Majibur Rahman’s residence during the search operation last night.
DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta on Sunday said a special investigation team would be formed to probe if there was any involvement of Ansar ul Islam, the Bangladesh chapter of the All Qaida in Indian Subcontinent, in the vandalism and burning down the police station at Batadrava on Saturday along with other angles.
The alleged custodial death of a fish trader, Safiqul Islam, on Saturday had sparked the anger, which resulted in vandalism and setting the police station on fire. An independent investigation by an additional SP from Karbi Anglong district into the Islam’s death was also announced.
