Two drown in stone quarry pit in Tirupur

Coimbatore: A 26-year-old woman and her 15-year-old neighbour drowned in a stone quarry pit filled with water at Nathampalayam village in Tirupur district on Monday.
The deceased were identified as K Uma Maheswari and E Kaviya, a Class IX student, both hailing from Nadar Colony in Vavipalayam.
Police said Uma Maheswari and three girls from her neighbourhood went to the quarry at Nathampalayam to wash their clothes and take a bath. While taking a bath, Uma and Kaviya slipped into the deep portion of the quarry pit and drowned. The other two girls sought help and locals rushed to the spot and alerted the Perumanallur police and fire and rescue personnel.
The rescue personnel managed to retrieve the dead bodies from the pit. The dead bodies were sent to the Tirupur Government Medical College Hospital for postmortem.
Police registered a case under Section 174 of CrPC. The bodies were handed over to family members after the postmortem. Further investigation is on. tnn
