Two security guards were shot and wounded after they responded to a robbery in progress at a guesthouse in Benoni on the East Rand in the early hours of Tuesday morning, Gauteng police said on Tuesday.

Spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo said it was alleged that five armed suspects had lifted the fence and entered the premises in Rynfield at 01:55.

He said the gang then went door to door.

"There was no response at the first room they knocked at. They entered into the second room where they woke the tenant at gunpoint, took his cellphone and ransacked the room, and also took his clothes.

Masondo said:

Security guards arrived and ordered the suspects to open the door, and immediately the shooting ensued.

He said both guards were wounded in the upper and lower body, and had been rushed to hospital.

The gang fled the scene.

Cases of business robbery and attempted murder were opened. No arrests have been made.
