CBI questions slain cop’s kin on audio tape

Ranchi: CBI has recently questioned the family members of deceased ASI Rupa Tirkey in connection with a conversation her father Devanand Oraon purportedly had with ASI Shiv Kanaujia.
ASI Rupa who was posted at Mahila police station in Sahebganj district, was found hanging at her official residence on May 3, 2021. Kanaujia was arrested as an accused in the case. Following a petition by Rupa’s relative, Jharkhand High Court had ordered a CBI inquiry into the incident.
Rupa’s father, a CISF jawan, said a CBI official had called him a few days back and asked whether he would be available the next day to ascertain the identity of the participants in an audio conversation. He had expressed inability saying his duty that day would last 24 hours.
Subsequently, the CBI officials visited her father’s home and played the audio clipping before other members of the family who confirmed that one of the voices was that of Rupa’s father.
Devanand Oroan said earlier CBI had asked him if he could affirm that the voice of the person he was talking to was of Kanaujia. He said, “I replied that I have never met Kanaujia and cannot be sure.”
Police had revealed the audio to media persons earlier. Oraon’s family took a strong exception to this and said that it should have been included in the probe but kept secret.
