According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the surface temperature in the national capital fell 11 degrees, from 29 degree Celsius to 18 degree Celsius on Monday in the period between 5.40 am to 7 am due to the thunderstorm. The maximum temperature in Delhi on Monday is likely to be 39 degree Celsius. A thunderstorm is also expected on Tuesday. The maximum temperature could remain below 40 degrees till May 26, and is likely to rise to 41 degree Celsius by May 28.
In other news, Delhi’s positivity rate was below 2 per cent for the first time 40 days. On Sunday, the capital recorded 365 fresh Covid-19 cases.
The Delhi public works department (PWD) has begun the much-awaited construction work on Nelson Mandela Road — starting from Munirka to Vasant Kunj — to make it a model stretch.
“We have started the construction work on the ground to make this a model road on European standards. It is a sample stretch and once it is completed, the best design will be adopted for developing other roads on the same line. The model stretch will be ready in the next six months,” said a PWD official. Read more
Heavy rainfall with thunderstorms caused waterlogging and traffic congestion across Gurgaon on Monday morning as several vehicles broke down on submerged roads.
Waterlogging was reported in many areas including the service lane on Narsinghpur stretch on Delhi-Gurgaon highway, Rajiv chowk, Signature tower, Sohna road, Golf Course road, Atul Kataria chowk, near DLF phase 1 metro station, Mata Mandir road, Vatika chowk, Agrasen chowk, Kanhai chowk, MDI chowk, Bakhtawar chowk, South City-2, Sector 31/40 road and sector 42/47 chowk.
With the IMD predicting rainfall in the city throughout the day, the Gurgaon deputy commissioner has issued an advisory asking private companies and corporate offices to guide their employees to work from home on Monday so that traffic congestion on the road can be avoided and repair and renovation works can be carried out smoothly by the civic agencies. Light rainfall, thunderstorms and strong winds are expected in parts of NCR till 11.30 am on Monday. A western disturbance and its associated cyclonic circulation lies over northwest Rajasthan resulting in “fairly widespread rainfall activity” over Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Uttar Pradesh on May 23 and 24, according to an IMD bulletin issued on Monday. The peak rainfall intensity is likely to be recorded on Monday.

On Monday morning, Delhi witnessed its first 'moderate' intensity thunderstorm of the season (March 1 onwards). Winds up to 70kmph were reported from the national capital.
Normally, Delhi witnesses around 12 to 14 days of thunderstorms in the period between March and May. However, this year it has only seen four to five and these were dry thunder mostly, the IMD said.
