Indian woman climber Baljeet Kaur on Sunday became the first Indian mountaineer to scale four 8,000-meter peaks. Kaur did it back-to-back and achieved the milestone in less than a month, by summiting Mount Lhotse. At 8516 meters, Lhotse is the fourth highest mountain in the world. At five fifty a.m. local time on Sunday, Kaur completed the Everest-Lhotse traverse to reach the top of Lhotse. A day earlier, she had also scaled Mount Everest in the wee hours of the morning. On April 28, Kaur had scaled the 8091 meter-high Mount Annapurna, which is the 10th highest mountain in the world. And on May 12, she summited Mount Kanchenjunga, which, at 8586 meters, is the world's third highest mountain. In 2021, Kaur had also conquered the 8167-meter-tall Mount Dhaulagiri, the seventh highest peak in the world. In the same year, Kaur and climber Gunbala Sharma also became the first Indian women to scale Mount Pumori, a 7161-meter high mountain. By scaling Lhotse now, Kaur has equalled the record of scaling five eight-thousanders, that was set by Priyanka Mohite, a mountaineer from Maharashtra.
