
Mumbai News Live Updates: Mumbai on Tuesday reported 218 COVID-19 cases, which is a substantial rise from the 150 cases registered a day earlier, taking the tally in the metropolis to 10,63,276, while the death toll remained unchanged at 19,566, a civic official said. Out of 218 new COVID-19 patients, 201 were asymptomatic, while none of the 17 who were hospitalised needed oxygen support, the official said, adding that just 48 of the 24,488 hospital beds earmarked for the pandemic are currently occupied. It was also the eighth consecutive day when the addition to the tally was above the 100-mark, he pointed out.
The inflow of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in Maharashtra was higher than that in Gujarat under his government, senior BJP leader and former chief minister Devendra Fadnavis said on Tuesday. Speaking at an industry meet, he said the current MVA dispensation must continue his policies to ensure the state keeps attracting robust FDI. “Before 2014, Gujarat was on top in terms of attracting FDI, followed by Delhi, Karnataka and some other state. Maharashtra used to be in fifth place. We took Maharashtra to top spot in the FDI list between 2015 and 2019,” Fadnavis, who was CM from 2014 till 2019, said.
Amid speculations of the BJP’s involvement in the opposition to MNS chief Raj Thackeray’s now-cancelled Ayodhya trip, the MNS on Tuesday hinted that it was, instead, NCP supremo Sharad Pawar and his daughter and MP Supriya Sule who was behind it. The party shared photographs of Pawar and Sule with Brij Bhushan Singh, the BJP MP from Kaiserganj in Uttar Pradesh who had opposed Thackeray’s Ayodhya visit on June 5 and warned that he will not be allowed to enter the city till apologizes “for humiliating north Indians”.
Mumbai received light rains on Monday night, bringing in some relief from the heat. According to the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) Colaba observatory, 3.4 mm of rainfall, categorised as light rain, was recorded overnight. The city is likely to receive more light showers this week.
As per the 24 hours forecast, Mumbai is likely to witness generally cloudy skies today, with the possibility of light rain or drizzle in the evening or night.

Shiv Sena's Kolhapur district president Sanjay Pawar will be its second candidate for the upcoming Rajya Sabha polls, party chief spokesperson Sanjay Raut said on Tuesday, in what is a clear snub to former MP Chhatrapati Sambhaji who was seeking support for his candidature.
The Shiv Sena, which heads the coalition government in Maharashtra, will contest two Rajya Sabha seats and ensure victory in both, asserted Raut, whom the party has given a fourth consecutive term in the Upper House of Parliament.
"Sanjay Pawar is Shiv Sena's mavala (soldier) and (Sena chief) Uddhav Thackeray has decided to give him candidature. But the official announcement will be done soon,” Raut said. (PTI)
Lighthouse Learning Group (formerly known as EuroKids International) on Tuesday said it has signed an agreement with the Maharashtra government's Women and Child Development (WCD) Department to implement the Project Adarsh Anganwadi.
Under the MoU, Lighthouse Learning will transform some existing Anganwadis, expand infrastructure, bring in high-quality content and curriculum, teaching aids and conduct training sessions to enhance the skills of the staff, according to a statement.
This project would commence from Mumbai and would be taken to other major parts of Maharashtra. “We are happy to partner with Lighthouse Learning for the upgradation of Smart Anganwadis to help support the education of young children. They will start with revamping a few existing Anganwadis in Mumbai immediately. (PTI)
Maharashtra on Tuesday recorded 338 COVID-19 cases, the highest since March 9, taking the tally in the state to 78,83,348, while one death put the toll at 1,47,857, an official said.
The addition to the tally on March 9 was 359, while it was 208 on Monday, the official pointed out. Mumbai accounted for 218 of the new cases, while the lone death was reported in Kalyan Dombivali Municipal Corporation limits in Thane district, which is part of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, he said.
So far, 77,33,452 persons have been discharged post recovery, including 276 in the last 24 hours, leaving the state with 2,039 active cases. (PTI)

Local train services were disrupted on the mainline of the Central Railway after some cattle were run over on the tracks between Bhivpuri Road and Neral stations on Tuesday, an official said.
The railway traffic was disrupted after some cattle were run over by a local train going towards Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) around 5.15 pm, said Shivaji Sutar, chief public relations officer of Central Railway.
Trains operating from Karjat towards Kalyan were affected, and since the incident occurred during the peak hours, the operations of local and long-distance trains were likely to be delayed, he said. The rail traffic was restored after one and half hours, it was stated. (PTI)
A 24-year-old man from Uttar Pradesh has been arrested for allegedly sending obscene pictures to the mobile phone of a lady doctor employed at a hospital in the western suburb of Bandra, police said on Tuesday.
Based on a complaint lodged by the 35-year-old doctor from civic-run Bhabha Hospital, the police on Monday apprehended Krishna Singh Jai Kumar Singh from Ballia in Uttar Pradesh, an official from Bandra police said.
The police are on the lookout for Singh's accomplice identified as Prince, a former ward boy of the hospital, he said. (PTI)

A 52-year-old man was arrested by the Navghar Police for allegedly raping a five-year-old on her school premises. The accused was an old school worker.
According to Navghar Police officials, the perpetrator lured the minor into a room on the school premises and raped her. The girl has been admitted to a hospital for treatment. (ANI)
Maharashtra Congress working president Naseem Khan on Tuesday resigned as head of the party's Mumbai campaign committee, in line with the party's resolution of 'one person one post'.
Khan, a former minister in the Maharashtra government, informed in a statement about quitting the party post in Mumbai.
The move comes a day after the state Congress unit held meetings with its top leaders. It was also decided to implement the 'one person one post' rule, as decided by the Congress in its 'Chintan Shivir' held in Udaipur earlier this month. (PTI)
Maharashtra Leader of Opposition Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday accused the state government of not bringing down fuel prices from its end and claimed that while the state charges Rs 30 as excise duty on a litre of petrol, the Centre imposes Rs 19.
The former chief minister was speaking at a state-level meeting of BJP leaders and officials here.
In an attempt to control retail inflation, the Union government had reduced excise duty, resulting in a drop in retail petrol price by Rs 9.50 per litre and Rs 7 per litre in case of diesel. (PTI)
The Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) on Tuesday arrested a man from Pune for his alleged role in the recruitment of terrorists for the Lashkar-e-Taiba's (LeT) network, a senior official said.
The suspect, identified as Junaid, a resident of Pune, was connected to the LeT's terror network through social media, the official said. Junaid was apprehended by the ATS officials in connection with a terror funding case, he said.
He was produced in a Pune court which remanded him in the ATS custody till June 3, another official said. (PTI)

The central bureau of investigation (CBI) on Monday took custody of four men booked in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case, who were recently arrested by the Gujarat anti-terrorism squad (ATS).
A special court in Mumbai granted the CBI the custody of the four – Abu Bakar, Sayyed Qureshi, Mohammed Shoeb Qureshi and Mohammed Yusuf Ismail Shaikh – for seven days, till May 30. Last week, the CBI had taken permission from a Gujarat court to take their custody and bring them to Mumbai in connection with the blasts case. Read more
The Maharashtra Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has registered an FIR against former BJP MLA Narendra Mehta and his wife for allegedly amassing properties and cash collectively worth Rs 8.25 crore, officers said.
The assets include a Lamborghini car which Mehta had gifted to his wife Suman on her birthday, they added. Suman, who is also an accused in the case, was in the news in August 2016 when she took the Lamborghini for a drive and allegedly met with a minor accident in Mira-Bhayandar. Mehta is a former mayor of the Mira-Bhayandar municipal corporation. Read more
There are no suspected or confirmed cases of monkeypox, a rare viral infection similar to smallpox, in Mumbai. However, on Monday (May 23) the Mumbai civic body issued a health advisory and stated that it has kept a separate 28-bed ward ready at the Kasturba Hospital for the isolation of suspected patients.
With the world yet to emerge from the Covid-19 pandemic, new cases of the infection are being reported from multiple countries. The World Health Organisation (WHO) said on Tuesday (May 24) that since May 7, when the current spate of infections began, 131 cases of monkeypox had been confirmed, and another 106 suspected cases had been reported in countries outside the ones in which it usually spreads.

The Bombay High Court on Tuesday rejected the transit pre-arrest bail plea filed by filmmaker Avinash Das, who was booked by the Gujarat Police for sharing a photo of Union Home Minister Amit Shah with Jharkhand cadre IAS officer Pooja Singhal, who was recently arrested by the ED in a money laundering case.
A vacation bench of Justice Bharati Dangre rejected Das' transit anticipatory bail plea, filed through advocate Adil Khatri, and directed the filmmaker to “approach the appropriate forum for relief'.
Justice Dangre said that Ahmedabad, where the FIR against Das was registered, was not too far from Mumbai. (PTI)
Two people died after a boat carrying tourists capsized in the Arabian Sea off the Malvan coast in Maharashtra's Sindhudurg district on Tuesday, police said.
The boat was carrying nearly 20 tourists, who were returning after scuba-diving, a police official said. The boat capsized mid-sea off the Malvan coast at Tarkarli, a popular beach destination, and the tourists fell into the waters, he said.
After being alerted, police and rescue teams rushed to the spot and pulled out the tourists from the waters. The visitors were rushed to a rural hospital in Maval where two of them were declared dead before admission, the official said, adding that another person was in a serious condition. (PTI)
