Easter Island in Chile to reopen for tourism

For the first time since the COVID-19 virus made its presence felt, Easter Island in Chile will throw its doors open again for tourism. The authorities have opted August 1 as the date for reopening the island officially for tourists after a long hiatus oftwo years.

Easter Island is located around 3,500 kms west of the coast of Chile. The island is among one of the most popular tourist destinations in the southern Pacific Ocean region.

The island is also known as Rapa Nui, and it is well-known for the moais or the enigmatic stone statues that stand tall for several years like watchmen.

Tourism constitutes Easter Island’sprincipal source of revenue, and hence, the reopening of the island for traveling purposes is most welcome. Chile is doing everything to reopen the island for tourism enthusiasts. At the moment, there is only one weekly flight to Easter Island; however that is going to change from August onwards. From August, there would be around three flights each week for the facilitation of tourists.

Easter Island a famed UNESCO World Heritage Site. The island’s almost 900 enormous statues or themoais were created by the inhabitants during the 13th–16th centuries. The statues are carved figures of humans with oversized heads. They are seen resting on gigantic stone pedestals known as ahus. There are around 5,000 people residing in Easter Island today.
