Xiaomi partners with Leica, to launch flagship phone later this year

The tweet does confirm that a Xiaomi smartphone with Leica camera tech will arrive in July. It’s not clear which smartphone will Xiaomi launch as its flagship phone Mi 12 Pro was launched earlier this year. Lei Jun, founder of Xiaomi, in a tweet said, "Today, I'm delighted to announce that @Xiaomi and @leica_camera
have developed a global strategic partnership in imagery technology. Combining a photography legend with our innovation, we're entering a new era in mobile photography. Exciting things to come in July!"
As far as Leica is concerned, this isn’t the first time the German company has partnered with a smartphone brand. Earlier, Leica’s camera tech was extensively used in Huawei phones. Huawei has been suffering globally — but doing well in China — since the US imposed sanctions on it. Leica had earlier partnered with Sharp and Panasonic as well for imaging tech in phones.
In a press release, Matthias Harsch, CEO of Leica Camera AG, said “We are convinced that the first jointly developed imaging flagship smartphone makes the pioneering progress of both companies visible. We will provide consumers in the field of mobile photography exceptional image quality, classic Leica aesthetics, unrestricted creativity, and will open a new era of mobile imaging.”
Other smartphone brands have also got partnerships with imaging companies. For instance, Vivo partners with Zeiss for its X-series of smartphones. OnePlus and Oppo have integrated Hasselblad tech in their flagship phones as well. It remains to be seen which series of phones will Xiaomi integrate Leica’s technology in the cameras.
