Guwahati: In a first such move to quell mob violence in
Assam, the BJP government on Sunday bulldozed houses of five families in
Nagaon district for burning down a police station.
A special investigation team (SIT) will be formed to probe if there was any involvement of Anasar-ul-Islam, the Bangladesh chapter of
Al Qaeda in the vandalism in the burning down of the
Batadrava police station on Saturday over an alleged custodial death of a local fish trader. The mob also beat up several policemen on duty.
“The incident of setting a police station on fire has established how dangerous the environment is here in Assam and in which environment the local people are living. We will take stringent action against those who are involved in the incident. At the same time, I would like to warn others that we will not tolerate and excuse such acts till the BJP government is in power here,” Chief minister
Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Sunday. “Large-scale encroachment is there at Batadrava in Nagaon. I have instructed the deputy commissioner to identify the land under encroachment. I have also instructed the DC and police either to evict or to take other legal action against the elements who have posed threat to peace and security of the entire area.”Additional director general of police (law & order) GP Singh said there are allegations that most of the people, who were involved in the incident, have built their houses by encroaching on government land with forged documents. “A case has been registered in this matter and it has been intimated to the district administration. The district administration has evicted a few houses, which were built illegally occupying the land and where they had carried out illegal activities, on Sunday,” he added.
