Stretch that links Sector 87 with IMT Manesar opens for traffic

Gurgaon: The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has completed the construction of a 145-metre stretch connecting the dividing road of Sectors 87 and 91 with IMT Manesar Road. This is the first of the many missing link roads that the development authority has planned to construct to ease commute across the city.
“We started constructing the road in November last year and finished the work earlier this month. The road has been opened to commuters now,” Major Shaveta Sharma, executive engineer of the infrastructure I division of the GMDA, said, adding the authority had set a deadline of six months to complete the work.
According to officials, the road will also connect Kakrola and Bhangrola villages and Dwarka Expressway to IMT Manesar. Under the Rs 70-lakh project, the authority constructed the main carriageway and a drain, besides using thermoplastic paint for road markings.
Missing link roads are a recurring headache in the new sectors of Gurgaon – between Sectors 58 and 115 – where several road projects could not be completed due to litigation, problems relating to land compensation, and delays in the transfer of land among others. Now, the GMDA has started focusing on resolving these connectivity issues by removing hindrances and constructing the missing link roads on priority.
To this end, in October last year, a plan had been discussed to construct 13 missing links, which would have a cumulative length of 3,965 metres and would cost around Rs 23.71 crore.
At the meeting of the core planning cell (CPC) of the GMDA earlier this month, officials had provided an update on the project, revealing that the tenders for five of the 13 links have been floated and work for the rest was being examined. During the meeting, chief executive officer Sudhir Rajpal had directed that work related to these projects should be expedited and the matter of land acquisition, where required, taken up with the Joint CEO.
Residents have welcomed the GMDA’s decision. “Commute in the new sectors has always been a pain because the roads do not provide connectivity in the way they are meant to. This increases the length of the journey for commuters and becomes a major headache, so it is good the GMDA is finally working towards constructing these missing link roads,” Nishant Upadhyay, a resident of Sector 84, said.
