PUNE: The Wakad police on Friday registered a case of attempt to murder against a 74-year-old retired army man of Thergaon, who jumped to death from the roof of his bungalow after allegedly assaulting his daughter-in-law (35) on Friday afternoon with a sharp weapon.
The Wakad police said the elderly man assaulted his daughter-in-law around 2.30pm because of domestic issues. The woman sustained serious head injuries and was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Thergaon.
The deceased man’s son (39), a software engineer, lodged a complaint with the police later in the night.
Assistant inspector Balaji Thakur of the Wakad police said, “The deceased man was a retired army man. One of his sons is a gym trainer, while the other is a software engineer.”
“We were patrolling the Wakad area when we received a call from the local residents stating that a man had jumped off the roof of his bungalow. We then rushed to the spot and found the entrance of the bungalow locked from the inside. The local residents called up the retired army man’s son, who reached the bungalow within a few minutes. When we entered the bungalow, we spotted a woman lying unconscious on the floor of the living room area,” Thakur said.
“Only the elderly man and his daughter-in-law were in the house when the incident occurred. We think that the elderly man and his daughter-in-law argued with each over a domestic issue, following which the man assaulted her in a fit of rage. He then walked upstairs after realising that the woman had sustained serious injuries and jumped off the roof,” he said.
Thakur added that the police team carried out a search in the entire house but was not able to find any note left behind by the ex-army man.
“Based on the findings of a preliminary probe, we have registered a case of attempt to murder against the deceased retired army man. We will now record the statement of his daughter-in-law once she regains her consciousness,” Thakur said.
