Tamil Nadu: Land grab cases high in Tambaram area

Police also arrested 84 accused in 43 cases of smuggling and peddling ganja in Tambaram commissionerate limits
CHENNAI: Tambaram police commissioner M Ravi on Saturday said that dealing with land-grabbing is a real challenge on the city’s outskirts as he receives not less than 20 land grabbing cases being reported daily and more than 589 cases have been given to the Central Crime Branch for investigation.
Ravi told reporters that a special team has been entrusted to deal with such complaints, as most of these complaints pertain to duplicate and bogus documentation.
He handed over 2 crore worth recovered stolen property to the owners in the past five months — 327 sovereigns of gold jewellery, 30 lakh cash, 25 mobile phones and other items on Saturday.
Ravi said that no rowdy murders were reported in the jurisdiction since the new commissionerate was formed in the past five months. “Rowdyism has been completely controlled in areas like Guduvancherry, Manimangalam, Maraimalai Nagar and adjoining areas. However 23 murders were reported which were fallouts of domestic disputes and 43 accused were arrested,” said Ravi. “We had chased 47 history sheeters and 18 of them had fractures after they fell while trying to escape. Our men too suffered injuries while chasing them,” he said. About traffic congestion, he said necessary steps were taken to ease traffic flow on GST Road from Maraimalai Nagar to Tambaram by deploying 10 red patrol vehicles. “For every kilometre there will be a patrol vehicle to streamline vehicles and also to prevent road accidents,” he said. Ravi also said the government has sanctioned set up of 10 traffic police stations in places like Guduvancherry, Pallavaram, Kelambakkam, Semmancherry and Peerkankaranai and four more law and order police stations in Thirumudivakkam, Perungalathur, Padappai and Kayarambedu.
Police also arrested 84 accused in 43 cases of smuggling and peddling ganja in Tambaram commissionerate limits and seized more than 150kg of ganja and 2,617kg of gutka items from 141 accused.
